Hyper Light Drifter achieves the same deception. Zatoichi throws his enemies off balance by disguising his true nature, his sword and his skills hidden out of sight, there’s no reason to suspect this shambling figure could, at any moment, release a devastating tide of death. He silently moves from fight to fight, protecting the innocent, drawing danger and evil his way. Playing Hyper Light Drifter reminded me repeatedly of Zatoichi, the wandering drifter travelling a lonely road for reasons not entirely clear. A deer darts across his field of vision and stops, for the briefest of seconds they lock eyes what are we doing here? Where are we going? The deer disappears into the storm as our hero gathers himself and trudges forward, slowly up the steps, sword at the ready, on to the next fight.

He pulls his cloak around his face, sword tucked out of sight. He sits, rests a moment, a trail of blood dotting the snow behind him. Hopefully the developers of Hyper Light Drifter will hear this critique and will be able to change the game for the better.Stumbling through the blizzard after a particularly violent battle, our hero limps to the bottom of a set of crumbling steps. Perhaps I put too much stock into the overabundant challenge to this game, but the truth is that great games allow players of all skill levels to enjoy them, not just the skilled players. I understand that there will be players who find this game amazing and without any problems.

Overall I was impressed with Hyper Light Drifter, and my final verdict would have been around an 8 had the difficulty not been such a large issue for me. This change wouldn’t change the difficulty of the fights, it would just allow players to enter fights at least somewhat prepared every time. Maybe a slow health regen when out of combat to allow players to at least restore their health to five bars before they enter these difficult battles. The health packs offer a great source for mid battle health regeneration, but when you’re stuck at one health and need a boost it sucks to have to use one of these packs. The other change I would make to the game is to include a setting where there is an alternate way for players to heal themselves. If a player beats the game on easy or hard, they may be incentivized to try the next difficulty up. What this could further do is lend itself to multiple playthroughs. Perhaps a simple easy, hard, insane breakdown would give casual players a way to enjoy the game at their own pace, and players looking to be challenged the appropriate level of difficulty. There is a wide range of players out there with a wide range of skills, and for a game to be truly successful, it needs to resonate with gamers of all skill levels. All that would be needed is a couple small changes.ĭefinitely the first alteration would be the addition of different difficulty levels. Not all is lost though, in my opinion Hyper Light Drifter can still be the awesome game that it deserves to be. What does this mean for the overall rating for the game? Find out in my Hyper Light Drifter Review!Īs I outline in this review, the game has a lot going well for it, but the one major feature holding it back. Ok maybe not that intense, but it can be quite frustrating. But on the other hand, this game is so mind-numbingly difficult, that some players may find themselves cursing and thrashing about in a hate filled rage. The pixelated graphics and wonderful sound track work together to form a beautiful experience. On one hand Hyper Light Drifter is a work of art. After my time with this game, I am left with incredibly mixed feelings. It looked like something that I would be into so I figured I’d give it a shot.
